Short Story
The Crown’s secret
Elen was a curious girl with bright, searching eyes and a restless heart. One evening, while wandering near an ancient oak, she discovered something strange buried
beneath its roots—a crown, shining with jewels that glowed like stars trapped in the jewels. "What secrets do you hold?" she said. Curiosity overcame her fear. She placed the crown upon her head. At once, golden liquid shone around her, and in a heartbeat she was
carried away to a world beyond imagination-the kingdom of Elysdor.
The land was breathtaking. Silver rivers flowed under floating mountains, ancient trees whispering in low voices, and mystical creatures roaming freely. Unicorns with manes of moonlight bowed gracefully, owls with fiery red feathers spoke in riddles, and even the stones beneath her feet shone with faint light.
All the creatures bowed low. They said, "You have a right to be the ruler." Elen's heart raced, and wonder filled her, yet a shadow of unease stayed within.
Not long after, a boy appeared. He looked about her age, with kind eyes and a gentle smile. He guided her through the kingdom, showing her hidden paths and secret places. His voice was soft, reassuring. "The crown is yours by right, do not fear its power, embrace it." Elen trusted him completely, her heart felt warm in his presence. But one evening, while sitting by a silver river, the boy's smile darkened. "Do you know," he said, his voice deepening, "why these creatures fear the crown?" Elen turned to him, startled. He leaned closer, eyes darkening. "Because of your mother, she was the queen before you, and she used the crown's power to twist Elysdor into shadows. She ruled with cruelty—burning forests, chaining dragons, silencing voices that spoke against her. These creatures remember. They fear you will become her." Elen's chest tightened.
The boy's smile widened. "And now she waits for you, waiting for you to finish what she began."
Before Elen could reply, the shadows covered the land. From the darkness, a tall, gaunt, and terrifying woman emerged. Her face was pale and her expression burning with pride and hunger for power. "My daughter," the queen said. "You have awakened the crown. Together we shall rule as mother and heir." Her heart ached, torn between joy and fear. But when she looked to the boy for comfort, he bowed to the queen. He said, "I brought you here to finish what we began." Elen felt betrayal pierce her chest. The boy she trusted a liar. Her mother was still alive, but corrupted. Shadows whispered through the crown, feeding her pain, loneliness, and her desire to belong.
The shadows spread across the sky, the glowing rivers turned black, the floating mountains cracked, and even the unicorns collapsed, losing their moonlight. The owls' voices died, the trees groaned in sorrow, and every creature trembled.
Elen stood trembling as shadows swirled around her. The crown's power urged her to surrender, and her mother's voice pressed closer, "Together, we will rule!" But Elen's heart ached at the sight of the broken kingdom. The creatures she loved lay in fear. Her mother reached out, the boy at her side whispering, "This is who you are? No," Elen cried. "I am not you!"
The crown blazed with both darkness and light, fighting within her. Summoning every ounce of strength, Elen turned its power inward. A surge of pure light erupted, shattering the shadows. Her mother screamed as the darkness consumed her, and the boy vanished with her into the void.
Silence fell. The rivers glowed again, the skies cleared, and the creatures rose, bowing to Elen the girl who had chosen light over power. Elen, though her heart still ached, carried scars of pain and betrayal. She had proven that true strength is not in blood or power but in the courage to choose what is right.
From that day, she was no longer just a curious Elen. She was Elen, Queen of Light, ruler of Elysdor and guardian of hope.
